COLAS BREUGNON — « BONHOMME VIT ENCORE »

This edition of Colas Breugnon published by Éditions Mornay in 1927 represents one of the finest achievements of the French illustrated book of the interwar period. Adorned with woodcuts engraved by Deslignères under the artistic direction of Sylvain Sauvage, one of the most elegant illustrators of his generation, it was printed in a very small number of numbered copies, each specially printed for a designated recipient. The copy presented here bears the number LIII and was printed specially for Sylvain Sauvage himself — a provenance of the highest distinction. Colas Breugnon, written by Romain Rolland between 1913 and 1914 and first published in 1919, is one of the most flavoursome and endearing novels by the author of the Jean-Christophe cycle. This joyful and earthy tale of a 17th-century Burgundian craftsman, in love with life, his craft and his freedom, constitutes a luminous counterpoint to Rolland's darker and more monumental œuvre. The present Mornay edition is its bibliophilic consecration.

Description

Romain Rolland and Colas Breugnon Romain Rolland (1866–1944), Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915, is best known for his novel cycle Jean-Christophe and his pacifist writings. Colas Breugnon occupies a special place in his œuvre: written as a personal diversion during the dark years preceding the Great War, this novel features a jovial 17th-century Burgundian craftsman-cabinetmaker, Colas Breugnon, who faces life's trials — epidemics, wars, bereavements, loves — with humour and philosophy, never losing his vitality or his art of living. The subtitle 'Bonhomme vit encore' ('The fellow lives on') encapsulates the spirit of the work: a celebration of life and joyful resistance to adversity.

Éditions Mornay and the Luxury Book of the 1920s Founded in the early 20th century, Éditions Mornay specialised in the production of very high-quality bibliophile books, calling on the finest illustrators and engravers of their time. Their limited and numbered luxury editions were intended for a clientele of wealthy amateurs and discerning bibliophiles. The collection they devoted to great texts of French literature illustrated by contemporary artists is among the most remarkable achievements of French book art of the interwar period.

Sylvain Sauvage and Deslignères Sylvain Sauvage (1888–1948) is one of the most refined illustrators of the first half of the 20th century. His style, influenced by Art Deco and Japonisme, is characterised by elegance of line, mastery of blacks and subtlety...
