Published in 1894 by the Dijon publisher L. Damidot, Dijon Monuments et Souvenirs is the major work of Henri Chabeuf, an eminent figure in Burgundian scholarship at the end of the 19th century. A member of the Académie de Dijon, the Commission des Antiquités de la Côte-d'Or, and former president of the Société Bourguignonne de Géographie et d'Histoire, Chabeuf devoted much of his life to the study and promotion of the architectural and artistic heritage of his native city. This work stands out for the rare combination of a scholarly text and a photographic illustration of exceptional scope for the period: 140 photogravures by Chesnay offer an unparalleled visual panorama of the monuments, streets, architectural details and works of art of Dijon at the dawn of the 20th century. At a time when photogravure represented the pinnacle of illustrated reproduction, this volume was a genuine publishing event. It remains today one of the most precious iconographic documents for the study of historic Dijon.

Description

The Author: Henri Chabeuf Henri Chabeuf (1836–1914) is one of the most remarkable figures in Dijon's intellectual life of the 19th century. A versatile scholar, he devoted himself to archaeology, art history and the historical topography of Burgundy. An active member of numerous learned societies, he published a considerable body of work on Burgundian heritage, of which this volume on Dijon is the crowning achievement. His membership of the Commission des Antiquités de la Côte-d'Or gave him privileged access to monuments and archives, lending his work exemplary documentary solidity.

Content and Organisation of the Work The work methodically surveys the principal monuments and remarkable sites of Dijon: the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, the cathedral of Saint-Bénigne, the church of Notre-Dame with its famous jacquemart, the Chartreuse de Champmol with Claus Sluter's sculptures, Renaissance mansions, fountains, ancient streets and museums. Chabeuf does not limit himself to dry architectural description: he restores the history of each monument, evokes the artists and patrons who shaped them, and places each building in the broader context of the history of ducal and royal Burgundy. The text, of great clarity, addresses both the scholar and the enlightened amateur.

The 140 Photogravures by Chesnay The illustration constitutes one of the major attractions of this work. The 140 photogravures by photographer Chesnay represent an iconographic corpus of inestimable...
