Published in 1974 by Éditions Cercle d'Art in Paris, Céramique de Picasso is the fundamental reference work on Pablo Picasso's ceramic output. Its author, Georges Ramié, was no outside observer: as director of the Madoura workshop in Vallauris alongside his wife Suzanne, he was Picasso's privileged artistic partner for over twenty-five years. It was in this very workshop that Picasso first discovered ceramics in 1946 and went on to produce the bulk of his work in this medium until his death in 1973. This volume serves as both an exhaustive monograph and a reference catalogue illustrated with 750 reproductions — 340 in color and 410 in black and white — most of them taken by photographer Eduard Quinn, a longtime companion of Picasso. As a direct witness and central figure in this artistic venture, Georges Ramié delivers not only an unparalleled illustrated inventory but also a firsthand account of the genesis, techniques, and spirit of a ceramic body of work unique in the history of twentieth-century art.

The volume is organized in two complementary parts: an introductory text by Ramié, dense with personal recollections, followed by an iconographic corpus of exceptional scope. The text traces the story of the encounter between Picasso and ceramics at the Vallauris Potters' Exhibition in August 1946, the Ramiés' astonishment at the painter's immediate inventiveness, and the daily collaboration that followed in the Madoura workshop for nearly three decades.
Ramié describes with precision the techniques employed by Picasso: working on unfired or biscuit-fired pieces, slips, glazes, metallic oxides, and above all the total freedom with which Picasso transcended the constraints inherent to ceramics to turn it into a field of plastic experimentation. Plates, vases, pitchers, statuettes — every form became a pretext for an unprecedented pictorial or sculptural intervention.
Eduard Quinn (1920–1997), an Irish photographer based in France, followed Picasso from 1951 to 1971, amassing a photographic archive of incomparable documentary value. The images reproduced in this book show Picasso at work in the Madoura workshop, hands in the clay, as well as finished pieces in all the richness of their colors and textures. These photographs are not mere illustrations: they constitute an irreplaceable record of the artist's creative process.

The edition is printed in a large quarto format (27.5 x 26.5 cm), bound in cloth boards with illustrated endpapers and a color dust jacket. The print quality, handled by workshops specializing in art reproduction, faithfully renders the nuances of glazes and slips — essential for appreciating Picasso's chromatic inventiveness as a ceramicist.
This volume is systematically cited in auction catalogues as a provenance reference for Picasso ceramics. To own the original 1974 edition — published the year following the artist's death — is to hold not only a first-rate art book, but a recognized expert tool used by the world's leading international auction houses.
